Belarus participates in “Earth’s Hour” action for second year

Belarus is offered to take part in “Earth’s Hour” action that is held on a worldwide scale on Saturday, March 27. The action envisages both people and enterprises switch off the light and all electrical appliances without which one can manage to do. It aims at attracting public attention to the problem of thoughtless and irrational use of energy resources.

Belarus took part in the action for the first time in 2009, when 7 Ministries and their structural subdivisions, the National Library and about a half million Belarusians participated in it.

So far 1000 cities and towns and 95 countries promised to switch the light off for an hour. Naturally, no-one is going to switch the light off in houses; participation in action is voluntary. According to the action’s coordinator, national manager of climatic programme Marina Bogdanovich, “Earth’s Hour” has a symbolic meaning. It aims at people’s awaring the purpose of energy saving and their voting for environmental protection rather than at mere saving energy during an hour.

Any Belarusian may take part in the action by registering at http://www.earthhour.org/ site and switching the light off at their homes and offices from 8.30 till 8.30 p.m. on March 27.
