Straw spiders making is a widely spread handicraft on the territory of Mogilev region. They are talismans and home decoration for Christmas and Easter: straw spiders protect homes and bring well-being and luck to the family. From the earliest times people have believed in wonder-working power of a straw spider that is supposed to absorb all negative that might ruin a smooth family life. According to the tradition, “an old” spider was burnt at Christmas and Kolyada to put a new one to guard the house.

The handicraft has survived in the villages of Grudinovka, Neryazh, Novy Bykhov (Bykhov district). The villagers has been making straw spiders and passing the technology to new generations. Successors of the craft traditions are specialists of Bykhov children’s school of handicrafts and arts. The tradition has been revived by Irina Kuhtina, the headmaster of the school. The pupils of the school are mastering the technology presenting the works at permanent exhibitions.

Elena Tishkevich says that popularization of straw spiders making will save traditional culture of the region. “We hope that a straw spider will become a souvenir brand of Bykhov district. It is supposed to attract more tourists to the area and to promote agro-tourism routes of Mogilev region.”

The corresponding documents are ready to go to the Culture Ministry of Belarus. The idea is for the straw spider making technology to become a historical non-material wealth of the country.
