A car for Prince Radzivil

The first car appeared in Belarus in 1895: the novelty was bought for Kovensky district railways.

Minsk governor drove a dark-blue “Benz”. Prince Radzivil in Nesvizh and princess Paskevich both had a pair of cars.

A 50-horsepower “Merse des” and a 20-horsepower “Benz” were bought by landlord Grebnitsky. Rechitsa district council owned two 25- horsepower cars produced by “Case”. And Minsk citizen Vasili Tereshchenko had 3 cars! Some wealthy peasants also bought cars (e.g. Terekhov from Vitebsk had “Benz”), while one car cost as a herd of cattle!

The first serious accident took place in Minsk on August 20, 1906. A Fedorov, having a license for passenger transportation, hit into a telegraph pole in Podgornaya street (now – Karl Marx street). The accident was so serious that tumbled passengers out of the car; one of them was sent to hospital.

Before WWI there were 6 taxis of 20-35 horsepower in Minsk; they could take about 4-6 passengers at once. In 1909 a merchant Nekrich from Bobruisk and an honoured citizen of Slutsk Oettinger started “Enterprise of car express”. Three buses «N. A. G.» run between Slutsk and Starye Dorogi, and two buses “Durkon” run between Slutsk and Lyakhovichi.

The first lorry in Minsk appeared at Kantorovich’s shoes factory in 1911: the factory’s owner asked the city council for permission for transporting goods to railway stations provided that he would pay transportation tax.
