Half a century mistake

Tumanovka – 2 is a small village including 17 yards with houses. There are hundreds of such villages in Belarus. It was built on the forest edge along the way connecting Mogilev and Vendryzh and running up to the Drut River.

The war started early in the morning with unexpected sounds of tanks bearing fascist swastika. They were rushing to the nearest aerodrome behind the village and then to the railway station Buinichi and Mogilev. But something stopped them. The fascist forces stretched along a narrow gully and gardens. Their guns were firing at the city. There was a hard battle. From behind Yamnitski forest fascist planes were flying terribly raging. Having dropped their bombs they hid behind the forest. A night sky was red with fires for three weeks. Then it calmed down as if the war was over. For 30 months the villagers lived under occupation laws.

There was one more morning. This December morning was the last one in the life of the village. The morning was filled with firing, screaming, dogs’ barking, moaning and groaning of the wounded. The air was filled with smoke and a strange sweet taste. The village was on fire. The village was burnt together with its residents.

In 1967 an obelisk was erected in the memory of the village ruined by fascists. 1969 opened the memorial complex Khatyn, the monument to all burnt down Belarusian villages and their residents. Tumanovka – 2 was listed as the burnt but restored village. It was a mistake. It took almost half a century to study all documents, archive resources and to correct this historical mistake.

The memorial complex Khatyn held re-exposition of a permanent photo-documentary exposition to immortalize the memory of the defeated Tumanovka – 2 villagers. The name of Tumanovka – 2 entered the list of the villages ruined with their population and not restored after the war.
