In july 1941 at Mogilev avenue of approach one of the bloodiest battles took place. 23 days and nights the soldiers of the 172nd shooting division, militia men, and thousands of members of people's volunteer corps fought for the city of Mogilev.
In the evening of July,12 after the violent fight when 39 Fascist tanks were left burning on Buinichi Field Konstantin Simonov, the war correspondent, visited the front edge of the defences. He met with the most distinguished soldiers and the commander of the regiment Semen Kutepov who became a prototype of the general Serpilin.
"A Hot Day" is a feature article by Konstantin Simonov where he told about the heroes of the war. It was published on July, 20 in "Izvestia" newspaper. Mogilev fighters were the example of real courage. Later they became prototypes of the characters of famous novels by Simonov "The Living and the Dead" and "They are not Born Soldiers".
