Mogilev has been there to witness the start of a religious procession in honour of the miracle-working icon of Godmother of Belynichi, a local authority on religious affairs told Interfax.
The procession started at 7 a.m. near the Three Baptizers’ Cathedral in Belynich.
Throughout the walking procession the clergymen will be saying prayers for the salvation of the people of Belarus. The pilgrims shall make 40 km on foot in two days.
At 9 o’clock Wednesday morning they are conducting a solemn mass in honour of the miracle-working icon of Godmother of Belynichi.
The religious march is intended to promote the revival of Orthodox Christianity, facilitate spiritual unity and pacification.
Made by Byzantine craftsmen, the icon was brought to Belarus coenobites, who fled from the City of Kyiv looted by the troops of Khan Bayi.
They followed the course of the River Druts, a tributary to the Dnieper, until they reached a forest-grown hill, where they stopped and started a monastery. Subsequently, the monastery and settlements on its outskirts spawned Belynichi, which is now a district centre in Mogilev Region.
