The Mogilev regional drama theatre celebrates its 128th anniversary. These days the theatre shows the performance “Happy Birthday, theatre!”
The Mogilev regional drama theatre is one of the oldest in Belarus. Its building is an architecture monument of the XIX century. It was built in 1888 at the expense of voluntary contributions of citizens represented mainly by doctors, teachers and the Jewish merchants’ community.
The idea of the theatre was not new; people wanted to have it in Mogilev and began raising money. May 28 1886 held the first sitting of the construction committee including the head of the city P.Kaptelev, a province engineer V.Milyanovsky, an engineer P.Kamburov, a chief of city police A.Svidersky, the honoured citizen and merchant I.Ratner.
May 14 1888 the constructed building of the theatre was consecrated and then presented to the city. In his speech the governor said: “Giving the building to Mogilev I entrust you to take care of it the way every good master takes care of his beautiful and valuable property”. May 15 the theatre showed its first amateur performance for which the tickets were quickly sold.
The theatre did not have its permanent troupe. The mobile theatre of 28 actors found at the Moscow actor agency was created by an actor and director V.Kumelsky. The Mogilev theatre showed performances of the leading Russian and European companies. The list of outstanding people who performed on its stage is impressing: Fyodor Shalyapin, Vera Komissarzhevskaya, Vsevolod Meyerhold, Yanks Kupala and Yakub Kolas.
In 1931 the Mogilev’s company was named the First Russian BSSR Theatre. In 1932 it was renamed into the State Russian BSSR Theatre. On the base of its troupe the National Academic Drama Theatre named after M.Gorky was created in Minsk. In 1947 the theatre moved to the capital of Belarus. The building of the theater in Mogilev did not have a constant keeper till 1953. In 1954 the Pinsk regional drama theatre moved here.
Today the company of the Mogilev regional drama theatre includes over 40 actors. The building of the culture establishment was restored in 2001. It’s the year when Andrei Novikov became its director. In 2003-2004 the theatre opened the small stage, a theater-studio for the youth.
In 2014 Saulius Varnas became the chief director of the theater. He initiated a number of culture projects. Today the repertoire of the theatre is represented by 30 performances. In March 2006 the theatre started the International theatre forum “М.@rt.contact”.
