During the check-up purchase by the Department for Financial Investigation of the State Control Committee in Mogilev region an attempt to sell the unique coin “Srebrenik Vladimira Svyatogo” dated by the year of 989 was suppressed. The information is provided by Alexander Sharoikin, the chief of the Organizational and Inspectorial Financial Investigation Department of the State Control Committee in Mogilev region.
The coin was stolen in June,2009 by a 45-year old Mogilev citizen during archaeological dig by the Faculty of History expedition (Mogilev State University named after A. Kuleshov) near the village of Voshod, Mogilev district. The citizen was a voluntary dig assistant. Later he wanted to sell it through the Internet in Belarus and Ukraine and asked $2 999 for the coin.
The unique coin “Srebrenik Vladimira Svyatogo” has a great historical value for Belarus as a symbol of Christianity and membership of Eastern Christendom. It was coined by Vladimir Svyatoslavovich to celebrate the Baptizing of Rus in 988 and his marriage to the princess of Byzantium.
It is the second coin in the history of Belarus. The fragment of the first coin was found in 1874 in the burial mound by Bykhov. The coin that was found near the village of Voshod is in a good condition. World museum collections keep only 30 coins of the kind. Its minimum price is $10-12 thousand.
