Mogilev Region erected a monument to Soviet Union Hero Army General Margelov, the administration’s culture department told Interfax.
The decision was solicited by Kostyukovichi District Administration.
According to the culture department, Vasili Margelov, whose parents were born in Kostyukovichi District, would have marked his 101th anniversary in December 2007.
General Margelov was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title in 1944 for the liberation of the City of Herson. General Margelov had been in control of the USSR Airborne Troops for almost 25 years.
The monument is thought to arouse patriotic sentiments in the local youth.
The contract was given to Russian sculptor Nikiforov, the author of a similar monument to General Margelov erected in Pskov.
