On the night from 13 of 14 of January Belarus, as well as other countries of the former USSR, celebrate New Year according to the Old Style Calendar. The tradition started in 1918, when a New Style Calendar was introduced. Thus, according to the Old Style Calendar, that night was January, 1, and it was called “Vasiliev Day”, and its eve – December, 31, was called “Vasiliev Night”.
There is a tradition of telling fortunes on that night.
The correspondent of the site was told at the culture department of Mogilev regional executive committee that festivities and concerts dedicated to the so-called “Old New Year” are held in many districts of the region; for example, Gorky district centre of culture holds the concert “Ah! Those Old New Year!”.
