Shklov held “Cucumber Day” – summer harvest festival. The festival began by the Culture Palace where a monument to a cucumber is located. Then guests and participants of the festival moved to the central market. There they could buy souvenirs, taste food, watch a nice performance, take part in competitions, visit an exhibition of self-made agriculture machinery and a school market.
“Cucumber Day” was first celebrated in 2006. The holiday has its traditions: the best cucumber growers get presents and souvenirs, at the same time they share experience in cucumber growing and show the biggest and smallest cucumbers they have grown. Shklov women share their secrets of pickled cucumbers.
In 2007 Shklov erected a monument to a cucumber. In its design it is a figure of a funny man holding a basket full of cucumbers in one hand and a yellow cucumber flower in the other hand, his head is covered with a cap in a form of a cucumber leaf. The monument is located in front of the central Market. The author of the monument is Andrei Vorobiyov, a sculptor from Mogilev. It is his idea of a hardworking Shklov citizen who grows cucumbers and then sells them at the market. The bronze sculpture composition was cast at the Institute of Metal Technologies of the National Academy of Science in Mogilev.
