Transfiguration church in Bykhov

The photo of Bykhov presented by the district history and local lore museum dates back to the early XX c.; it images the town's central street that was first called Pushkinskaya, and in 1902, when the railway started functioning in the town, was renamed into Vokzalnaya.

In the centre of the picture there is a monumental Orthodox (previously - Uniate) Transfiguration Cathedral built in the retrospective Russian style, situated at the end of the street. There was a small market around the cathedral - a number of small shops along the two sides of the street. The Cathedral hasn't survived till our days. It was blown up by fascists, though during the German occupation the Cathedral started operating, eye-witnesses say. The monumentality happened to be the major reason of the tragedy - the high domes of the Cathedral were a kind of a reference mark for the Red Army's long-range artillery. When the Germans realized it, they blew the Cathedral up.
