Youth’s employment rate in Belarus is one of the lowest in the CIS and makes 55%

Youth’s employment rate in Belarus is one of the lowest in the CIS and makes 55%. The information is provided by Olga Gerasenko, a specialist of the UNPF in Belarus.

According to the statistics, the labour force participation rate among young people aged 15-29 is over 50% in a number of CIS countries (Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan). The unemployment rate among young people makes 10% in the CIS and is comparable to the world’s average of 12.6%. However, it is considerably lower than the statistics of the EU – 18.1%.

Experts say that the secondary education coverage in the CIS countries remains high. The literacy rate among young people aged 15-24 is virtually 100%. In Belarus per 1,000 citizens there are 169 ones aged 14-31 with a University education and 245 – with vocational school education. In Belarus young people are those aged 14-31. Young people make 23% of Belarus’ population (2.2 m). 82.7 % young people live in urban areas, 17.3% - in rural ones.

The UNPF’s report of 2014 “Investments in Youth” says that today’s number of young people in the whole world is 1.8 billion. It is the biggest ever registered. They have a huge potential to contribute to resolution of the problem that the mankind faces. However, many of them are deprived of legal opportunities to get quality education and proper jobs, to participate in the political life of their country. The report says about the conditions created to support young people’s development, about the opportunities young people have to be involved in decision making.

According to Babatunde Osotimehin, the UNFPA Executive Director, our common future depends on how the needs and wishes of young people are met. Capital investments in the resolution of youth’s problems (investment in professional training, education and sexual health) create a solid foundation to counteract the ageing of the world’s population efficiently.
