Kostiukovichi District

Kostiukovichi district is located in the east of Mogilev region. It was created on July 17, 1924.

The district occupies an area of 1.5 thousand square km. The population counts 32.7 thousand, of which 53.2% are townspeople.

The average population density is 22 people per square km. The town of Kostiukovichi (district centre), 143 rural settlements and 7 village councils are situated on the territory of the district.

The district is lowland-hilly and flat within the south-east part of Orsha-Mogilev lowlands. The heights of 160-180 m above sea level prevail, the highest point being 190.6 m to the north of the village of Proletarskaya.

Mineral wealth includes peat, cement marl and chalk, clay, sand.

The average temperature in January is - minus 7.8 degrees centigrade, in July - plus 18.5 degrees centigrade. The average annual precipitation is 600 mm. Vegetation period makes up 185 days.

Flowing from north-east to south-west of the district is the river Besedz with tributaries (Surov, Zhedunka, including Krupianka and Krupnia; Derazhnia, Oleshnia, Cherniavka, Trostianka, Zubar, Mashovka and Svinka). Besides, Lake Sviatoye (Saint) is to be found in the district.

The prevailing soil type is sod-podzol (35.2%), sod-podzol marsh (48.5%). Forests grow on 30.1% of the territory, of which 26.7% are man-sown woods, the major tree species being conifers. Marshes occupy 8.5% of the territory.

Natural attractions - water springs in the villages of Studenets and Tupichin, and a park in Tekhanichi.

Agricultural lands account for 55.8 thousand ha, of which 12.4 thousand ha was drained. Basic agricultural production lines: milk and meat cattle raising, swine breeding, potatoes, fodder and grain crops.

The industry is represented by food producing and wood processing enterprises, building materials companies.

There is Orsha-Unecha railway line and motorways linking the district with Klimovichi, Krasnopolie, Khotimsk, Cherikov, Surazh; Unecha-Polotsk oil pipelines (part of Druzhba pipeline system).

There are 19 secondary, 5 nine-year and 4 elementary schools, a sports school, an arts school, 23 kindergartens, 28 clubs, 29 public libraries, 4 hospitals, an out-patient hospital and 18 first aid centers functioning in the district.

Architectural monuments - Sviato-Pokrovskaya Church (built 1863) in the village of Gavrilenko, a church in Zabychenie (19-20 century), a Catholic church (19-20 century) in the village of Kanichi and St Trinity Church (built in 1842) in the village of Samotevichi.
