Krichev district is located in the east of Mogilev region. It was formed on July 17, 1924, eliminated in 1962-1965 and re-established since 1966. It occupies an area of 0.8 thousand square km. The population of the district is 10.1 thousand people (1998). The average population density is 13 people per one sq. km. There is a town of Krasnopolye (the centre of the district), 110 village settlements, and 5 village councils (Botvinovo, Kostyushkovichi, Lobkovichi, Molyatichi, Krasnaya Buda) in the district.
The district is located within the Orsha-Mogilev plain. The surface is flat with a slight slope from the west to the east till the valley of the river Sozh. The average altitude is 160-180 m above sea level, the highest point (193 m) is situated one km away from the village of Boyary. Natural resources: cement chalk and clay, sand, sand and gravel materials, phosphorite.
January's average temperature is minus 7.8 C, June's average temperature - plus 18.2 C. Annual precipitation equals 595 millimeters. Vegetative period lasts 185 days.
The river Sozh with its tributaries the Oster, the Black Natapa, the Volches, the Mertvitsa, the Belyanka, the Dobrost, the Khudobychka and the Lobzhanka flow through the region The prevailing soil type is sod-podzol (50.9%), sod-podzol marsh (31.7%), water-meadow (10%). Forests make up 25.7% of the territory. The main tree species are conifers, birch, fur-tree, aspen, 3.8% are man-planted, mainly conifers. Marshes occupy 3.2% of the territory.
Krasnopolye district natural sights include an oak in Krichev, an oak forest near the village of Dorogaya, a birch forest near the village of Molyatichi, a forast near the village of Botvinovka. The total area of agricultural land equals 47.3 thousand hectares, 6.6 thousand of which is drained land. Agricultural producers specialise in milk and meat cattle breeding, grain and forage crops, flax.
The principal industry branches are food and construction materials production, metal working industry.
Highways Bobruisk - Krichev - Rosslavl, Krichev - Mstislavl, and railways Orsha - Unecha and Mogilev - Rosslavl run through the territory of the district.
13 secondary, 2 nine-year and 3 elementary schools, a sports school and an art and 2 music schools, a vocational school, a non-state economy and law college, 16 kindergartens, 19 clubs, 23 libraries, 4 hospitals, 4 polyclinics, 3 out-patients stations, 15 medical centers and Kolos sanatorium function on the territory of the district.
