The number of newborns in Mogilev Region reached 11,086 in 2006, or 5.4% up on the year, Interfax learnt from the Committee for Labor, Employment and Social Security of the regional administration.
The source specified, 73.6% of the year’s newborns were born in urban areas, and 26.4% were born in the countryside.
However, the region’s population decreased by 9.4 thousand people over the past year, despite a 2.8% reduction of the death rate (17,979 people, 55.4% in urban areas, 44.6% in rural areas).
Most of the deaths were caused by accidents (33.9%), cardiovascular diseases (31.5%) or cancer (14.7%), the source specified.
The rate of disabled people among the working-age population of Mogilev Region has decreased to 40 persons per 10,000 (40.4 per 10,000 in 2005).
